Here is an idea for a cushion that can be worn by the kids and then used for sitting on the floor in the halla.

It is A4 sized to fit easily in the school bag. The cushion is made of waterproof leatherette. The cover is a soft cotton, one side black, one side, personalised for the child (perhaps from an old man utd or jedward pajamas, or a knitted cover). One inch black elastic is sewn from each corner and can be tied in front.
Its main purpose is to be soft, warm and clean to sit on. It can be attached to the school bag or the child can wear it on her back coming to school, keeping her warm and comfortable. It could be worn in the class room, providing soft padding for hard-backed chairs. It can be worn in the halla, when walking around after lunch, so that it doesn’t get lost.
To make it (25cmx30cm), cut a piece of waterproof matierial around 27cm x 62cm (depending on the size of the child). Fold it over (inside out) and sew up the 3 sides, leaving a hand-sized gap for your child to help pull it right-side out and stuff it with a piece of foam or any padding you might have at home. Sew up the gap.
For the removable cover, you will need a piece of black material, around 30cmx35cm, and a soft coloured piece the same size, 2 pieces of 1inch black elastic and a button or safe buckle.
Suppliers:
Hicky’s – black leatherette €19.99 per meter (will make around 9), one inch black elastic €? per meter
Foam Services Barrack st Cork Co. Cork Phone: (021)4963186 – Can cut 56 cushions (approx 20cm x25cm) from a 2″ thick sheet of seating quality fire retardant foam for €2.50+vat per cushion.

Safer Internet day is part of a global drive to promote a safer Internet for users of all ages. In Ireland the campaign is organised by the National Centre for Technology in Education (NCTE) and promoted through Webwise, the Internet Safety initiative of the NCTE.
In conjunction with the NCTE, National Parents Council Primary (NPC) will present information sessions for parents on the issue of Internet Safety to coincide with Safer Internet Day.
In Cork East this event will take place on:
9th February 2011 in The Raddison Hotel, Little island, Cork at 7.30pm
As parents, it is vital to have good, open communication with your child about their internet lives. Like all other aspects of their lives, we need to talk to our children about the potential dangers that they may come across online as well as the many benefits they will find. Setting rules and boundaries around children’s Internet usage is an important aspect of keeping them safe on-line.
The Webwise Internet Safety sessions focus on strategies for improving communication between parents and children and negotiating boundaries to their internet use. You will hear young people talking about how they use the Internet, why it is attractive to them, and get an insight into their main concerns about being online. Parents will be introduced to strategies to help their children be responsible, effective and safer Internet users.
If you would like any information regarding this event please contact Berni McMahon, Cork East County Secretary, Tel: 086-3572066 or email: bernimcmahon@eircom.net

This year’s main fundraiser will be a night out at Curraheen Greyhound Track. It will be held on Friday March 11th with the first race starting at 7.47 pm and the last race at 10pm. Parents are asked to invite friends and family to support this fundraiser.
For those wanting to make it a family night out, children are welcome at the track but must leave straight after the last race. Curraheen Park have told us that there will be a DJ playing on the first floor after the last race until 12.15am, and the stadium will close at 12.45 – 1am.
Cairde will be selling pre-purchase tickets for €10 allowing Admission & Race Card for 1 Adult & 1 Child, additional children (under 14) are €1. For every €10 ticket sold, Cairde will get back €7 from the track. This money will be spent on school resources and subsidising events.
Cairde will organising a bus to take people to Curraheen Park and back to Midleton on the night. There will be limited number of tickets for the bus so buy yours early! Details on how to buy tickets and more information will be sent home with the children in a couple of weeks.
We hope that this fundraiser will be well supported so please, spread the word and put Friday March 11th in your diary for a fun night out.
Keep an eye on this page for more details.

At the Cairde meeting last night a parent suggested that all parents come to an agreement, whereby when a bunch of school friends are invited to a birthday party, each child gives a card (home-made maybe) and ten euro.
This amount is less than the average amount spent so is more recession friendly. What do you think?

The Halloween disco will take place on Friday Oct. 22nd from 6pm – 8pm in the halla for the Gaelscoil pupils, their parents and siblings. In October, Cairde will send home a disco ticket to each family, to allow them free entry on the night. This free event can only take place if parents volunteer to help so a letter will be sent home with the ticket letting you know how you can sign up. Watch here for more info on what promises to be a spookily great social night out for all the families!
(Note:This event is for Gaelscoil families only and for Health and Safety reasons, the numbers will be monitored and the door may need to be closed if the maximum number covered by our insurance is reached.)
